Wednesday Afternoon Post (Aug 30, 2017)

Howdy Folks!

This is what E-8 has been working on during the last few days:

Reading:

We've been penning body paragraphs that explain how Akiak utilizes life skills to win the Iditarod Race. Since this is an opinion piece, we made sure we had evidence from the text along with a warrant (explanation) to support our opinion!

We've also been practicing the keyword strategy to assist us in research and to write down information in our own words!

Writing
We've been utilizing various strategies to come up with small moments in our life that we could write about. We also discussed how the small moments we are writing could be a springboard for ideas concerning realistic fiction!

Turning and Talking in order to share small moments that they've wrote!

Math
We've been practicing using tools such as abacuses and odometers to increase and decrease six-digit numbers by 100,000, 10,000, 1,000, 100, 10, or 1 with an emphasis on this as a multiplicative calculation. We've also been doubling numbers beyond the range of basic number facts as a means to practice the doubles strategies and see how effective the strategy can be!

We also had rounds of PE with Ms. Edgar this week:

As well as a couple rounds of music class with Mr. Volkar:

And we had library with our librarian, Mrs Fowler!

And that's a wrap-up folks! Cheers, and have a good one!

Friday Evening Post (August 25, 2017)

Howdy folks!

Here is what we've been working on for the last couple of days:

Reading
You been reading the story of Akiak, and how this 10 year old dog finally won the Iditarod race! In our opinion, Akiak used of variety of life skills to get first place, so we collaborated in order to find evidence/clues within the text to support our evidence! We then utilize these clues to start writing a multi-paragraph opinion essay!

We've also been practicing our reading stamina during Read-to-Self!

Another skill that we have been practicing during reading block is the keyword strategy wherein we read an article or nonfiction text, and we jot down some keywords that'll help us recall the information we've read. We then utilize those keywords to recite to a partner the information we just read, and finally, we then write down what we said by you using those keywords! It's a great strategy to assist students in putting down information in their own words!

Math
Students have been exploring the different ways to record five and six digit numbers using expanded form.We have also been Exploring the structure of of five- and six digit numbers, and locating these numbers on a number line!

We had Pokemon Friday today!

And over the course of this week we've been staying fit and healthy by taking laps! We then record the number of laps we take each day which is just a good way track how how much exercise and getting!

And that's a wrap-up folks! Cheers, and have a good one!
