Friday Afternoon Post (February 16, 2018)

Howdy Folks!

Here's what we've been working on so far this week!

Math

We've been practicing the skill of division by using decomposing/partitioning dividends into parts that are easily divisible by the divisor. The following mathematical practices are being developed as we're working on division:

Math Practice 3Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Students justify the partitions that they made to make the division more efficient.

Math Practice 4— Model with mathematics. Students use partitioning diagrams (area/array model) to model division problems.

Math Practice 7— Look for and make use of structure. Students partition a dividend into parts to make it efficient to divide. They recognize that 452 ÷ 4 = (400 ÷ 4) + (40 ÷ 4) + (12 ÷ 4).

Reading

We've been reading about the Spanish conquerors during the Age of Exploration, and their setting up of Missions in California. We've also been reading about the impact of the Spanish and their missions on the Native Americans living in California at the time. We've been utilizing the sketch and label strategy to clarify our understanding of the texts that we're reading!

Writer's Workshop

We've been working on various aspects of penning an opinion/persuasive essay! One aspect is the lead/introduction of the essay, wherein we hook the audience using various strategies and then we stated our claim/opinion/thesis.

We also have been practicing using a small moment/narrative as a way to elaborate on our reasons:

And that's a wrap folks! Cheers, and enjoy the February break!
